The Neanderthal, a close relative of modern humans, lived approximately 400,000 to 40,000 years ago in Europe and western Asia. Known for their robust build and large skulls, Neanderthals were skilled hunters and tool makers. Recent genetic studies have revealed that they interbred with early modern humans, and as a result, many people today carry a small percentage of Neanderthal DNA.
