Ouranosaurus is one of the very few duck-billed dinosaurs from Africa. The name is derived from Arabic for “courage,” but also references the local name for the desert monitor lizard, ourane.

Ouranosaurus is easily recognized for the large sail on its back. Its body shape closely resembles other duck-billed dinosaurs. Much like Spinosaurus (also from northern Africa), the sail is thought to have helped Ouranosaurus regulate its temperature. Ouranosaurus likely moved around entirely on two legs.
