Xiphactinus (pronounced zi-fak-tin-us) was a large predatory fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous period. It was one of the largest bony fishes of its time, reaching lengths of up to 20 feet. Xiphactinus was characterized by its streamlined body, a large mouth filled with sharp, fang-like teeth, and a distinctly forked tail, features that suggest it was a fast and powerful swimmer.
One of the most fascinating things about Xiphactinus is that it's often discovered with well-preserved examples of its last meal inside its body. In fact, one famous fossil specimen showcases a nearly complete smaller fish that it swallowed whole. This provides scientists with unique insights into the behavior and diet of this prehistoric fish.
