The budgerigar, often called a budgie, is a small, colourful parrot native to Australia. Green and blue budgerigars belong to the same species; their different colours are mainly the result of genetic variation. They are intelligent, sociable birds known for their lively behaviour and ability to imitate sounds. Wild budgerigars are naturally green and yellow.

The familiar blue variety is primarily a colour form developed through captive breeding, rather than the typical wild appearance. Adult males typically have a blue area of skin above the beak, called the cere. Females usually have a whitish, pale blue or brown cere, depending on their age and breeding condition.
