Privacy policy

Animal Kingdoms Limited ("we", "us", "our") runs animalkingdoms.co.nz. We are a small family business in Auckland. We respect your privacy and follow the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.

This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and your rights.

1. What we collect

Information you give us:

  • your name, email address, phone number, and delivery and billing addresses;
  • order details: what you buy, delivery notes, gift messages, and layby payment records;
  • account details, if you create an account;
  • messages you send us by email, phone, text or social media;
  • reviews and wishlists;
  • your marketing choices, such as email or text sign-ups.

Information collected automatically when you use the website:

  • device and browser information, your IP address and your approximate location;
  • the pages you view, the products you look at or add to your cart, and how you reached the website;
  • information about how orders are placed. We use this to check that the order came through the normal use of the website.

Payment information: payments are processed by Shopify and our payment providers. We never see or store your full card number.

Information from other sources: we may receive information about you from payment providers (such as confirmation that a payment went through), NZ Post (delivery updates), and social media platforms when you contact us or interact with our pages. Where the Privacy Act requires it, we will tell you when we collect information about you from someone else.

2. Why we use it

We use your information to:

  • process, pack, send and track your orders, laybys, returns and refunds;
  • manage your account and wishlist;
  • answer your questions and give customer support;
  • send order and delivery updates;
  • send marketing emails or texts, but only if you have agreed (see section 5);
  • prevent fraud and misuse, including orders placed with bots, scripts or other automated tools, and to enforce purchase limits;
  • understand how people use the website, so we can improve it and our range;
  • show relevant ads on other websites and social media, where you have allowed it (see section 7);
  • meet our legal, tax and accounting duties.

We only collect what we need for these purposes.

3. Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the people and services that help us run the store:

  • Shopify, which runs our online store, checkout and customer accounts.
  • Payment providers, to process payments and refunds. If you pay with Afterpay, their privacy policy also applies.
  • NZ Post, to deliver your parcel. We share your name, address, phone number and email address.
  • Klaviyo, to send our emails and texts, and to show sign-up forms.
  • Growave, for our wishlist.
  • Google (Google Analytics and Google Ads), to understand how the website is used and to measure and show ads.
  • Meta (Facebook and Instagram), to measure and show ads, and to run our social media pages.
  • Our accountant and professional advisers, when needed.
  • Police, courts or government agencies, when the law requires it, or when needed to prevent fraud or serious harm.

If the business is ever sold, your information may pass to the new owner so that they can keep serving you. They must still protect it.

4. Information stored overseas

Several of these services store or process information outside New Zealand, including in the United States, Canada, Australia and Europe. Before we use a service, we check that it protects personal information in a way that is comparable to the Privacy Act. Where needed, we rely on its privacy terms or on your permission.

5. Marketing

  • We only send marketing emails or texts if you have agreed to receive them.
  • Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link. To stop marketing texts, reply STOP. You can also contact us at any time.
  • If you unsubscribe, we will still send messages about your orders.

6. How long we keep it

We keep your information only as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy. Order and payment records are kept for at least 7 years, because New Zealand tax law requires it. We delete or anonymise information when we no longer need it.

7. Cookies and tracking

  • Preferences: they remember things such as your wishlist and sign-up choices (Growave and Klaviyo)..

8. How we protect it
