The Metriacanthosaurus was a medium-sized carnivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period. Unlike many of its more famous theropod relatives, which had either extremely long or very short spines on their back, the Metriacanthosaurus had spines of moderate length, which is reflected in its name. These spines may have supported a hump or sail-like structure on its back, although the exact purpose of this feature remains a mystery.
