The Xiongguanlong was a meat-eating dinosaur that lived around 125 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous Period. Its name means "Grand Pass Dragon," named after the Xiongguan Pass in China where its fossils were found. Xiongguanlong was a medium-sized predator, but what makes it really interesting is that it was an early relative of the giant Tyrannosaurus rex!
Despite being much smaller than T. rex, Xiongguanlong had a similar body shape, including a large skull and powerful jaws, hinting at the fearsome predator its family members would eventually become.
