The Maltese is a small companion dog known for its pure-white, silky coat, dark expressive eyes and affectionate personality. Despite its elegant, almost aristocratic appearance, it is often lively, playful and surprisingly confident. The face is one of the breed's most distinctive features.

The eyes are round and expressive, often appearing almost black against the white coat. The expression is alert, gentle and often slightly inquisitive. The contrast between the dark eyes and nose and the white hair gives the Maltese its characteristic, almost doll-like appearance. The coat is particularly important to the breed's appearance. A Maltese has long, straight, silky hair. When left long, it can hang almost to the ground, creating the flowing appearance seen in dog shows.

However, there is another everyday look which is shown in the CollectA figurine: the “puppy cut”, which is shorter, rounded and fluffy, often making the dog look younger and more like a teddy bear. The CollectA figurine caught the Maltese in the position of being attentive or alert as if the dog was waiting for a signal from its master.
