The iconic Halloween pumpkin, also known as a jack-o'-lantern, wasn't originally made from pumpkins! Ancient Celtic people in Ireland carved turnips and potatoes to ward off evil spirits during Samhain, a precursor to Halloween.
When Irish immigrants came to America, they discovered that pumpkins, native to the New World, were much easier to carve than turnips. So, the tradition changed, and the pumpkin became the face of Halloween!
Now, every October, pumpkins everywhere are transformed into glowing, grinning symbols of festive fright. So, the next time you carve a pumpkin, just think, you're taking part in a tradition that's been glowing strong for centuries!
