The Gomphotherium was a fascinating prehistoric relative of today's elephants, but with some dramatic differences! Living around 12 million years ago, this large mammal had four long, downward-curving tusks—two on the upper jaw and two on the lower jaw. Unlike modern elephants, Gomphotherium's lower tusks were shovel-shaped, which it likely used to scoop up water plants from swamps and riverbanks.
