White lions is that they are not a separate subspecies of lions, but rather a rare color variation of the African lion. Their white color is caused by a recessive gene, and they can only be found in certain areas of South Africa and in captivity. White lions are sometimes called "ghost lions" because their light coloration makes them blend in with their surroundings, giving them a ghostly appearance.
