The California condor is one of the largest flying birds in the world. It is a type of vulture, famous for its enormous wingspan, its bare orange-pink head, and its remarkable recovery from the brink of extinction. By 1982, only 23 California condors remained worldwide. A major captive-breeding and release programme helped bring the species back. It plays an important role in nature by removing animal carcasses, which it feeds on and its recovery from near-extinction is one of the most remarkable wildlife conservation stories in North America.
