Manx cats are a tailless breed originating on the Isle of Man. The absence of a tail is genetic, caused by a long-ago mutation, but it results from a dominant gene, so it’s easily propagated through generations.
- Scientific Name: Felis catus Characteristics: This cute Manx cat is far from its island home between England and Ireland, but these felines are beloved worldwide. This one displays the playful nature for which Manx cats are appreciated.
- Size and Color: A sleek black coat contrasts with white paws and a white stripe from forehead to neck, adding to the mystery surrounding this tailless beauty.
- The Manx figure is 2 ¼ inches long and 1 ¾ inches high, similar to a D battery.

History
In the Celtic Sea, which flows between England and Ireland, sits the Isle of Man, a 50-mile long island mostly devoted to farming today. Here the Manx cat originated, a genetic anomaly causing them to appear tailless. Because the gene is dominant, tailless cats soon ruled the island. They were a short-haired breed initially, but for many centuries, the Vikings ruled the island, and their long-haired cats mixed with the short-haired Manx, resulting in long-haired, yet still tailless, Manx cats.
